Dissecting the Spiny Dogfish Shark

While some high school students throughout the New York City area will dissect an earthworm, or if they’re lucky, a fetal pig, the High School for Community Leadership wanted to provide students with an even more exciting experience. On May 20th, students dissected the spiny dogfish shark. They opened up the jaw to feel the multiple rows of razor sharp teeth, identified the gender of the shark, compared the gills of the shark with the respiratory system of the human, and slit open up the stomach to discover the shark’s diet; one group even found a squid that had been swallowed whole!

Owl Pellet Dissection

On May 3rd, 2011, students discovered the diets of owls by examining their regurgitated stomach contents, called the pellet. Using dissection equipment, students carefully picked apart the pellet to look at its contents; students discovered the remains of rats, mice, birds, shrews, and moles. Some students were even able to re-create full skeletons of these digested animals!
